process

chaos comes with the summer haze is a generative piece of art that lives solely on the Ethereum blockchain. Each work is generated by the code in accordance with the Artist’s guidance - selecting the patterning, brushstrokes, coloration, arrangement, alignment, portals, overlays and filters.

composers.

The work is generated with three conceptual composers:

The Earth, which has created the underlying texture and movement.

The Code, which has created the washes, structural elements and features.

The Human, which has painted the brushstrokes over the top.

painterly origin.

The brushstrokes’ initial form is from the Artist’s watercolor paintings which took their color blends from fields of flowers, but their movement from a more chaotic place.

earthly origin.

The earthly patterns originated from the Artist’s photography of water shot while crossing the Pacific on a shipping vessel, as well as, photography of clouds he has been shooting for the past decade.

features.

The third composer, the Code, takes hold apply the earth and the human elements as well as a myriad of features, including:

colors (palette field theory)

A curated 236 color hazy palette meant to seamless integrate when applied randomly, accompanied by 37 specific groups of colors, paired for the same goal of haziness.

ribbons (wind)

A wind effect akin to white ribboning, blowing away coloration.

patterns of the earth (gestalt)

Drawn from the Artist’s photography of the water while crossing the Pacific on the maiden voyage of a shipping vessel and sky photographs taken over the past ten years; they capture both a realistic and abstract version of the movement of water and clouds.

brushstroke paths (meltdown dances)

Ten possible guidances, each directing the application of the brushstrokes, bringing the human hand back and providing the chaos as if scribbled in a panic.

paintbrushes (meltdown widths)

A can of paintbrush options with fiber thicknesses from three pixels to thousands.

dimensional portals (doorway)

The layering of additional patterning layers as smaller, blurry, gray-scale versions, meant to reference all manners of portals - doorways, windows, black holes, other dimensions.

mirroring (gestalt mirrors & chaos folds)

Occurring on multiple layers, this feature splits and mirrors certain elements, akin to Rorschach tests.

rotating/enlarging (compass)

Certain layers of the work may rotate up to 359 degrees to provide variety and compositional directionality.

grids (shadow frequency)

This feature operates on two levels, midway through the build it splits or produces multiple images to propagate the project’s grid structure (singular, diptychs, quads, 4x4, 8x8, 16x6); it then operates in a similar manner as the final layer, again splitting the image, this time including the brushstrokes.

feature titles.

The breadth and specificity of the features is exemplified in their titling. The Artist spent innumerable hours working on the verbiage of the features. Some are obvious in their relationship to the build, whereas many are intentionally obtuse, yet poetic. Collectively, they provide another informational guideposts to the conceptual grounding of the work. Click here for all of them.

When the three composers were finished, chaos comes with the summer haze was complete.
